The Joyce Foundation is saddened by the senseless act of gun violence that claimed the lives of a Chicago Police officer and two medical professionals at Mercy Hospital. Our sympathies go out to families of the victims, the Mercy Hospital community, and to the Chicago Police Department, which is grieving the loss of the second officer killed in the line of duty this year. The deaths of medical professionals and a law enforcement officer in a place of healing should leave us all outraged. This heartbreak is the direct result of the easy accessibility of guns in our society. At the Joyce Foundation, we are also resolved to continue to press for evidence-based gun safety policies to save lives. These tragedies are preventable, if only we have the will to do so.
